Are Upgrade Engine Mount Worth It?

Engine Mounts

One of the first mods almost everybody does is the Rear Motor Mount (RMM), as well you should. Are upgrade engine mount worth the time and money, totally. The factory bushings are mediocre and allow too much movement that’s why you need to upgrade your Mazdaspeed 6 mount. There is a small amount of drivetrain slop and shifting may feel a bit notchy. Upgrading the RMM stiffens up the drivetrain slop quite a bit allowing for smoother shifting for one. The Passenger Side Motor Mount (PMM) & Transmission Mount (TM) are mediocre and are big eyesores to boot. Upgrading the mounts allows for much better shifting response and handling as the engine isn’t rocking or being tossed around in the bay, but it comes at the expense of some noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). Vibrations are felt at idle, tho this can be remedied by raising idle RPM if you have a Cobb Accesport (AP). Vibrations often lessen after several months/several hundred miles of breaking in.

I personally had a SURE RMM back in the days and it broke after 10 drag runs so I change it for the Corksport and have no problem since then. I also change my PMM and TM for the 80 durometer JBR and really like the feel and responsiveness. It changes everything it is stiff but smooth at the same time.

For the differential mount I bought SURE because they have the rear and the front one. A lot of people change only the rear one because it’s the most fragile but I change the front also since I want the car to be the most rigid possible.

Rear Motor Mounts

James Baron Racing | Urethane 80 Durometer | Part Number: MS6-RMM jbr-rmm

The JBR 80 durometer rear motor mount is constructed out of 4130 tubing and precision TIG welded. This mount is a direct replacement, no modifications are required to install it. From the street to the strip, this mount can handle anything you plan to throw at it.

CP-E xFlex™ | EPDM rubber | Part Number: MMS6WBM cpe

The Custom Performance Engineering’s mount is CNC machined out of billet 6061-T6 aluminum and designed to bolt into the stock location without any modifications. After much testing, Custom Performance Engineering decided to use a rubber for this particular application. Urethane will simply not withstand the extreme temperatures that EPDM rubber will. Custom Performance Engineering was able to use a more rigid and durable rubber therefore offering all of the advantages of urethane with a higher temperature tolerance.

Because the new design is more rigid and flex’s less you will experience less wheel hop with spirited driving. Essentially the engine mount allows the car to “hook up” better.

Damond Motorsports | Polyurethane | Part Number: DM6RMMBB dm

The Damond Motorsports Rear Motor Mount for the Mazdaspeed 6 was designed to drastically reduce engine movement, take anything your MS6 can throw at it, all while keeping added NVH minimized. This RMM starts life as a solid stout chunk of alloyed aluminum. Once it’s machined to size we add two pairs of off the shelf bushings sourced from the market leader of polyurethane bushings. The bushing pairs themselves are specified at different durometers, allowing both high and low frequency vibrations to be absorbed, throughout the entire RPM range. The sleeves housed in each bushing pair are the appropriate length for optimal fitment on the Mazdaspeed 6. This means no cutting out the rear tabs in the subframe, and no bending of the triangle support bracket that fixes the mount to the transmission. With this mount there will be added NVH over stock, as well as a slight break-in period for NVH to settle.
Anthony Woodford Racing | Polyurethane 70, 88 or 95 Durometer | Part Number: AWR-6301 awr-rmm

This RMM is made from tube steel powder coated with polyurethane bushings and nickel plated steel sleeves. It is race track tested on their speed touring cars and on their pace cars.

AWR believes so strongly in their engine mounts and sway bars that they back them with a limited Lifetime Warranty. What’s more, this warranty, excluding bushings, is retroactive to all mounts and sway bars built previously by AWR. Basically, if it breaks or fails, AWR will fix or replace it at their discretion. The warranty is ‘limited’ in that bushings are considered a normal wear item, so the urethane or rubber bushings are not covered, but if the metal cracks, breaks or otherwise fails, they’ll replace or repair it.

Front Engine Mount

Turbine Tech | Urethane 85 Durometer | Part Number: TTMS6FEM turbine-tech-front-engine-mount

Made out of 6061-T6 high-yield strength (35 000psi), this full TIG-welded aluminium construction is built to last. Assembled with a 85A durometer urethane bushing for moderate stiffness and comfort, this strong and sturdy mount will keep that powerful motor from travelling back and forth in the engine bay. It virtually eliminates wheel hops and keep your drive train away from those nasty shocks it produces.

How would an additional mount ease off the stress on the rear diff? Two things, one is the drive shaft being slapped repeatedly by the engine moving back and forth under acceleration. At the back, your differential is being shacked like a baby seal in the shark’s jaws. Second, your tires are not getting a permanent grip all the time, but rather bites on and off several times per second, thus inducing wheel hop. How serious this problem is may vary depending of your driving habits, tires compound, dirt on the ground, etc. This may or may not be noticeable but it does happen at various rates. When it happens, the shocks translate to the drive train by the CV joints, heavily stressing out the front differential mount.

Differential Mounts

One of the weaker point of the Mazdaspeed 6 is the rear diff’s bushings. Fortunately for us there are some options. You can buy replacement bushings, or if you are a hardcore track warrior, you will just upgrade the whole mount! Because RACECAR!!

The rear diff actually has 2 mounts, the front and the rear one. Here are all the options you have for the rear differential mount upgrade.

Rear Differential Mounts

CP-E xFlex™ | 60 Durometer rubber | Part Number: MZXM00009B cpe-rdm

The first broken differential mount was delivered to them by a customer, and they were asked to create a bullet-proof replacement rear mount for the vehicle. The cp-e™ differential mount as an optimize geometry. By placing material in critical areas, they increased the area moment of inertia; a rating of an objects resistance to bending.

Their mount is constructed from cold rolled steel and is powdercoated for corrosion resistance and an attractive presentation. The bushings are 60-duro rubber inserts that positively locate the differential, but will not rattle your passenger’s teeth out. This unit is a direct replacement for the factory differential mount and comes with everything necessary for a complete installation.

Corksport | Urethane 70 Durometer | Part Number: Ate-6-128-10 corksport-rdm

The CorkSport Mazdaspeed 6 Rear Differential Mount provides a bulletproof design to withstand any abuse your Mazda can throw at it. Crafted from extremely lightweight billet aluminum, the CorkSport Rear Differential Mount uses only the highest grade hardware and hardened steel shear pins. Tested by some of the most powerful Mazdaspeed 6’s around, you can be assured the CorkSport Rear Differential Mount can withstand whatever you can throw its way. Whether you want to upgrade your OEM mount to something more durable, or simply have a high horsepower Speed 6 that has already destroyed your stock mount, this is the mount for you.

The CorkSport Advantage:

–  Superior Construction: Crafted from billet aluminum and made to last with durable components

–  OEM Fitment Designed as a direct OEM replacement for a worry free install.

–  Black anodized finish with zinc coated sleeves for a durable, lasting finish and long life.

–  Lightweight Billet aluminum shaves weight from the rear of your car.

SURE DREADNAUGHT | Polyurethane | Part Number: SURE0514 sure-rdm

The Dreadnaught™ is the solution to the dreaded problems caused by the OEM rear differential brace in the Mazdaspeed6. The rear OEM differential brace is prone to breaking and allow premature failure of the rear axles. It is anodized Black for a clean, corrosion resistant finish. The Dreadnaught™ is a constructed from solid 6061-T6 aluminum that interlocks within each other. The urethane bolt sleeves are made from stainless steel. The Dreadnaught™ is fastened together with eight 1/2″ Torx bolts and Threadlocker Loctite.

To be called the Dreadnaught™, heavy duty had to be an understatement. It puts a leash on the rear differential and calls it Sally. NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) is more than acceptable for a daily driven MS6 and may not even be noticeable by some drivers. The precise CAD/CAM designed bracing makes the fitment just like an OE component. Their track grade polyurethane insures that the brace will stay rigid, keeping the axles in their linear position without increasing NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) into the vehicle cabin.

Turbine Tech | Urethane 85 Durometer | Part Number: TTMS6RDBB ms6-bushing

Machined by Turbine Tech for the Mazdaspeed 6. This is a much less expensive solution than replacing the whole rearward differential mount. The stock bushings (left) are for comfort, not performance. Their 85A durometer bushings will give your differential a stiffer feel and will offer better protection from differential movement. These bushings are made from a hardened polyurethane.

Front Differential Mounts

SURE JUGGERNAUGHT | Polyurethane | Part Number: SURE0512 sure-frd

The OEM mount that bolts to the stock rear differential of the Mazdaspeed 6 is meant to fend off rotational forces of the drive shaft. Unfortunately, the OEM component allows for excessive movement which commonly results in shearing of the stock bolts or cracks in the differential casing. Keeping the rear differential secured on both the X and Y plane is very important. The Juggernaught™ has been called in to secure the differential. The Juggernaught™ is designed to be a direct OEM replacement with spot on fitment. In addition to the 3 mounting points of the OEM component, they added 2 additional mounting points. The additional mounting points, and the solid urethane bushings, create a much more rigid rear end of the Mazdaspeed 6, transferring power down to the asphalt.

The T6-6061aluminum design yields a minimum tensile strength value of 40,000 PSI. The 10.9 grade Torx hardware of the Juggernaught™ is rated at 150,000 PSI. All hardware is finished with high strength threadlocker Loctite. It is CNC machined from T6-6061 aluminum with a 316 stainless steel bolt sleeve that runs through the virgin grade polyurethane. The grade of polyurethane will stay rigid, keeping the differential in its linear relationship with the drive shaft, while keeping NVH to a minimum. (Stealth Black or Translucent SURE Blue options.) It is also anodized in a bright-dip black anodize for a clean, corrosion resistant finish.

Turbine Tech | Urethane 95 Durometer | Part Number: TTMS6RDFM turbine-tech-front-dm

This beefy, sturdy mount has first been initially developed for local customers who grew tired of repeatedly breaking their differential housing. They have several customers who broke their housing not once or twice but 3 times before swapping to a bullet-proof Turbine Tech MS6 mount. Over 30% of the differential housing will crack, develop airline leaks or simply shear off the mounts over time. This, with little to no abuse.

This mount is a direct replacement to the stock unit. It retains the same geometry with the differential remaining at its exact same location. It comes with upgraded mounting hardware, split 95A urethane bushing & complete instructions required for the install.
